A Axis Communications Case Study
Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno needed a better way to spot wildfires amid worsening drought and limited visibility from traditional lookout towers. To extend human spotters’ reach, they partnered with Axis Communications and deployed Axis AXIS Q6045-E and AXIS Q6045-E Mk II PTZ HD network cameras (testing AXIS M1025/M1054 drone cameras and planning AXIS P1428-E 4K units) for remote monitoring and early fire detection.
Axis Communications’ cameras stream HD and time-lapse video over high-speed microwave links to command centers and the public, powered by solar-charged battery systems and controlled remotely; NSL’s setup uses features like 32x zoom and near-IR sensitivity to distinguish smoke from dust and headlights. The Axis-powered system has enabled earlier detection and quicker resource mobilization—NSL reports spotting fires from some locations as far as 130 miles—and also supports monitoring of weather and other hazards.
