Case Study: Minnesota Department of Transportation achieves real-time traffic visibility for Twin Cities drivers with Axis Communications video servers

A Axis Communications Case Study

Minnesota drivers ease on down the road

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) needed to give Twin Cities travelers up-to-the-minute visual traffic information without replacing its large fleet of analog cameras. MnDOT worked with Axis Communications, using Axis video servers to digitize existing camera feeds so real-time images could be distributed over the Internet.

Axis Communications deployed more than 60 Axis video servers to convert feeds from 238 analog traffic cameras, enabling images updated once per minute on MnDOT’s website and near‑instant incident/congestion maps for media and emergency services. The solution proved cost‑effective and widely used — the site typically receives 3,000–4,000 visitors per day and can exceed 35,000 on snow days — helping travelers choose better routes and improving freeway management.
