Mansfield University links access control to IP video with Axis

Mansfield University, a state college in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, faced recurring dormitory security problems as students frequently propped doors open, creating safety and liability risks. To strengthen residence-hall security without unduly restricting student freedom, the university deployed Axis Communications network video surveillance — including AXIS P33 Series and AXIS 216FD network cameras — integrated with its One Card ID access system.

Axis Communications’ network cameras (installed via partner Blackboard Transact) were mounted over entryways and tied into the card-access system, using Power over Ethernet and built-in motion/audio detection to trigger live alerts and archive footage. The solution let administrators identify and hold accountable those leaving doors ajar, aided police investigations using video timelines, and even helped staff identify and intervene with a student at risk of self-harm, while providing a scalable platform to expand surveillance across the university’s 175-acre campus.
