Hawthorne police oust crime from public park with Axis cameras

The Hawthorne Police Department was losing Eucalyptus Park to drug activity, truancy and vandalism and had a full‑time officer assigned 11 hours a day to try to control the problem. To regain the park without overstretching personnel they deployed a network surveillance strategy built around Axis Communications technology (installed by Axis partner Iron Sky), including AXIS 233D PTZ and AXIS 216MFD megapixel network cameras and a city‑wide remote monitoring service.

Axis Communications’ cameras were linked via wireless mesh and point‑to‑point radios to an intuitive video management system with Google Maps integration and H.264 archiving, letting officers view and control cameras from anywhere — even patrol cars. The result: criminal activity in the park dropped dramatically to mostly nuisance incidents, video evidence enabled quick ID and arrests of vandals, archives are stored affordably for a year, and the officer assigned to the park was returned to his regular street beat.
