Case Study: City of Dubuque achieves safer streets and smarter traffic monitoring with Axis Communications

A Axis Communications Case Study

City of Dubuque steers the future of traffic safety towards IP technology

The City of Dubuque faced a loss of intersection video visibility after switching from network cameras to microwave-based vehicle detectors, limiting traffic engineers’ ability to view and record incidents. To restore visual support, the City of Dubuque turned to Axis Communications and systems integrator RACOM Corp., deploying Axis network cameras including AXIS Q1755 fixed HDTV, AXIS Q6035 PTZ, and later AXIS Q1604 models with Wide Dynamic Range–Dynamic Capture.

Axis Communications’ cameras, integrated with Milestone XProtect software and HP servers, became the backbone of Dubuque’s Intelligent Transportation System: roughly 260 cameras now cover 80 intersections, recording 24/7 at 10 fps with 30-day storage. The solution enabled targeted video analysis that improved signage and road markings, helped police and citizens resolve accidents (even reversing fault in one case), and delivered roadway improvements at about a tenth of the cost of adding lanes.
