Buffalo, NY police force protects citizens with city-wide wireless video surveillance

The City of Buffalo needed a real‑time, city‑wide video surveillance system to reduce crime, with high‑resolution, weatherproof cameras capable of reading license plates at long range, performing in low light, and being easy to relocate. Axis Communications provided the evidence‑grade AXIS 233D Network Cameras (integrated by Axis partner Avrio Group into Avrio’s Rapid Deployment Surveillance Solution PoleCams) to meet those requirements.

Avrio deployed a wireless RDSS network of PoleCams housing AXIS 233D cameras and wireless mesh nodes, giving Police Headquarters encrypted, 30‑fps live streams and remote pan/tilt/zoom control. The Axis Communications cameras helped scale the system to 115 units, contributed to five arrests while installation was still underway (including a burglary caught 10 hours after a camera went live), generated 50+ citizen requests for coverage, and enabled more proactive, evidence‑grade policing across the city.
