Axis video servers give the public and first responders access to real-time traffic video

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) needed a cost‑effective, easy‑to‑deploy upgrade to its aging analog camera network so commuters and first responders could access real‑time traffic and road‑condition information. Working with TrafficLand, VDOT digitized its feeds using Axis Communications video servers to enable live video delivery over the Internet.

TrafficLand implemented a public website and a secure high‑speed video distribution system using Axis Communications video servers, bringing more than 100 live cameras online in northern Virginia and expanding to over 240 public cameras across the Washington, D.C. metro area. The Axis servers provide near‑real‑time images (updated every second) and have supported massive demand (1.5 million hits during the 9/11 surge, roughly 400,000 hits per day, 3.5+ million visits overall and 500+ million served web pages with no crashes), helping smooth traffic flow and accelerate emergency response.
