Axis cameras help safeguard competitors and spectators at the 2015 UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia

UCI Road World Championships City of Richmond prepared to host the 2015 10‑day international cycling event and faced the challenge of providing 24/7 situational awareness across changing race circuits and multiple jurisdictions. Organizers needed a single unified command center to stream, store and securely share live and archived video from city cameras, police motorcycle/helicopter feeds and broadcast cameras. To meet those needs they relied on Axis Communications cameras and encoders (deployed via partner Johnson Controls) as part of the event’s video management strategy.

Johnson Controls integrated more than 450 cameras into a common VMS, including over 350 AXIS Q6045 MkII PTZ and AXIS P3364‑LVE fixed dome cameras plus two AXIS Q‑series video encoders, using the city fiber backbone, two wireless mesh networks and a VPN for remote access. Axis Communications’ HDTV 1080p, 32x‑zoom PTZs and Lightfinder fixed domes enabled long‑range identification, real‑time tracking of people and suspicious packages, and even reuniting lost parents and children; the coordinated system helped the event conclude without a single major incident.
