Fremantle Prison completes Convict Depot in over 2 years with Axiom

Fremantle Prison partnered with Axiom to develop a new permanent interpretive visitor centre called "The Convict Depot." The challenge was to create a world-class visitor experience within the prison's historic guard facilities, a task made more complex when the unexpected discovery of a vaulted brick cellar during restoration required a complete re-think of the floorplan and design approach.

Axiom's solution involved a design concept that built upon their existing signage strategy for the site. They utilized materials and installation methods that minimized impact on the original heritage fabric, including custom glass cases that slide into place. The immersive experience combines didactic panels, supergraphics, and interactive touchscreens designed for all ages. As a result of Axiom's collaborative work, the project received a 2012 City of Fremantle Heritage Award for Conservation and/or Interpretation.
