Wellcome Library manages 1 million items with Axiell CALM

The Wellcome Library, part of the Wellcome Trust, required a collections management system capable of handling its vast and growing archive of one million physical and digital items. The challenge was to create a central discovery portal for its diverse collections, which involved integrating its archive system with other platforms for digital content and its main library catalogue. To meet this need, the library adopted Axiell's CALM Collections Management System for Archives.

Axiell's CALM solution enabled the integration of the library's archive with its digital repository, Preservica, and its library management system, Sierra, synchronizing metadata nightly. This streamlined the entire object management workflow and allowed for cross-collection searching. The results were a significant reduction in the cataloguing burden through powerful import tools and the ability to rapidly add new items, with the collection growing by nearly 3,000 items every six months. Axiell's system ensured the library could proactively share information and answer increasingly demanding visitor questions.
