Case Study: Wellcome Library achieves streamlined archive management and integrated digital discovery with Axiell’s CALM

Wellcome Library faced the challenge of managing a vast and growing collection—about one million digital and physical items occupying 20 km of storage, with over 250,000 archive and manuscript items already catalogued—and needed a central discovery portal and integrated workflows to catalogue, access and present diverse formats. To address this, the Wellcome Library adopted Axiell’s CALM Collections Management System for Archives.

Axiell’s CALM was implemented and integrated with Preservica (for digital storage) and the Sierra MARC catalogue, synchronising descriptive and technical metadata nightly to enable cross-search, online ordering and end-to-end archival workflows. The CALM solution streamlined pre‑accession to presentation, reduced cataloguing burden through robust import/export and standards support (OAI, EAD, EAC), supported rapid entry of roughly 3,000 new items every six months, and helped the Wellcome Library make over 250,000 archived items more discoverable for research and public use.
