Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is aiming to improve engagement with a new image recognition app that uses collections data to tell a greater story

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum wanted to boost visitor engagement by offering richer, mobile-friendly content that goes beyond the limits of gallery labels. To support a trial of the Smartify image-recognition app, they worked with Axiell, using Axiell’s Mimsy XG collections management system and MWeb web publishing tool to expose curated collections data for mobile use.

Axiell’s tools let Smartify pull artist, title, date, size and descriptive information directly from the Mimsy database, and Glasgow Museums published 140,500 object records and 53,000 digital images via MWeb after improving their documentation. The integration has driven strong usage — an average of 1,368 scans per month since July 2018 — demonstrating increased visitor engagement and shifting interest across galleries (notably the Glasgow Boys gallery).
