How Vienna Technical Museum Managed a Smooth Relocation

Technisches Museum Wien faced a complex relocation when a depot rental was ending: thousands of objects (from a 160,000‑object collection, with about 10% on display) — including cars, locomotives and gliders — had to be moved into a new 8,500 m² depot in Haringsee. To manage the inventory and reduce risk, the museum adopted a barcode workflow using the Axiell Adlib collection management system and the Axiell Move mobile application.

Using Axiell’s tools, TMW recorded roughly 10,000 objects into about 2,000 transport units with Bluetooth scanners, planned precise new storage grid zones (accounting for size and weight), and scanned items on arrival with Axiell Move to update locations in real time. The vendor’s solution enabled a tightly controlled move: after 1.5–2 years of planning the physical relocation was completed in a few months (mid‑December 2016 to Easter 2017) with no transport errors, up‑to‑date records and clear time and cost savings.
