Geological Survey of Austria - Customer Case Study

The Geological Survey of Austria (Geologische Bundesanstalt, GBA) maintains a library of more than 350,000 historical books, maps, letters and theses that are vital for geology, resource planning and research. Their challenge was preserving fragile paper records while making these geographically oriented, multilingual materials discoverable and accessible to geologists and government users worldwide; to address this they turned to Axiell and its Adlib system.

Axiell implemented the Adlib database and a scanning workflow that makes materials searchable online, with clickable geographic maps, author indexing and thousands of bilingual keywords. The solution gives geologists and scientists direct, round‑the‑clock access to GBA’s holdings, improves discoverability of historical maps and data used for infrastructure and resource planning, and has enabled continuous growth of the digital collection as content is scanned on request.
