Case Study: MLB Advanced Media delivers real-time baseball analytics with AWS Lambda

A AWS Lambda Case Study

Preview of the MLB Advanced Media Case Study

MLB Advanced Media - Customer Case Study

MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM) wanted a new way to capture and analyze every play in real time, but its existing approach needed a platform that could ingest data from ballparks across North America, provide rapid compute for live analytics, and then scale back down during the off season. MLBAM turned to AWS Lambda and the broader AWS cloud to support its Player Tracking System, also known as Statcast.

Using AWS Lambda along with services like Amazon EC2, S3, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, Kinesis, CloudFront, and Direct Connect, MLBAM built a serverless, scalable analytics pipeline that cleans, processes, and delivers player-tracking metrics within seconds of each play. The solution can handle about 15 games in a day, ingest and store more than 17 petabytes of data per season, and deliver raw metrics and video to broadcasters within 12 seconds after a play ends, creating new insights for fans, broadcasters, and teams.
