Guardian News & Media Automates Subscription Fulfillment using AWS Step Functions

Guardian News & Media (GNM), the publisher behind theguardian.com, needed a more reliable way to orchestrate subscription fulfillment across many distributed systems. As subscriber volumes grew, unreliable integrations between its primary database and third-party billing, payment, and delivery systems caused delays, missed updates, and occasional checkout issues. GNM turned to AWS Lambda, working with AWS Step Functions to help automate these complex workflows.

Using AWS Step Functions with AWS Lambda functions, Guardian News & Media built reliable, serverless workflows for subscription checkout, fulfillment, account deletion, and ETL processes. The result was faster development, better visibility into workflow execution, and more dependable newspaper delivery; GNM also reduced technical support time for account deletions by about 4 hours per week, an 80% reduction.
