FINRA Adopts AWS to Perform 500 Billion Validation Checks Daily

FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, needed a faster and more scalable way to validate massive volumes of daily market data while meeting strict security and compliance requirements. To support its Order Audit Trail System (OATS), FINRA evaluated several architectures and chose AWS Lambda, along with Amazon S3, Amazon SQS, Amazon EC2, Amazon VPC, and Amazon EMR, to handle the growing validation workload.

With AWS Lambda, FINRA built the solution in just three months and moved data validation to a serverless model that automatically scales with demand. The result was a 2x improvement in cost efficiency, elimination of on-premises server management, and a reduction in validation time from up to seven minutes to less than one minute. AWS Lambda also helped FINRA process up to 500 billion validation checks per day and better support broker-dealers with more detailed error reporting.
