Edmunds Saves $100,000 in Year One by Going Serverless on AWS

Edmunds, a U.S.-based software and internet company that helps car shoppers browse dealer inventory and read vehicle reviews, needed to rapidly transform its library of 50 million vehicle images into new sizes and resolutions to improve quality and load times across its website and mobile apps. With only a few weeks to deliver, its existing Cloudera MapReduce-based approach would have taken too long and required new cluster infrastructure and ongoing monthly costs.

Using AWS Lambda with Amazon S3 and Amazon Athena, Edmunds built a serverless image-processing solution in days, not months. The AWS-based system processed 50 million images in 8 days for $6,000, avoided at least $10,000 in monthly costs, and delivered a faster, more scalable architecture that also enabled an archiving feature and future image-processing flexibility.
