Woodside Uses AWS to Power IoT, Big Data Operations

Woodside, a global oil and gas company headquartered in Perth, faced fragmented analytics trapped in deep data silos that slowed decision-making and innovation. To accelerate insight delivery and modernize operations at its Pluto LNG facility, Woodside migrated to the AWS Cloud and adopted AWS IoT to underpin its IoT and big data initiatives.

Using AWS IoT, Woodside scaled its sensor fleet from about 10,000 to 200,000 devices to monitor operations 24/7, running more than 6,000 algorithms on that data—including models that predict and prevent foaming in the Acid Gas Removal Unit (AGRU). The AWS IoT–enabled solution optimized production and maintenance, reduced analytics turnaround from three–six months to weeks or days, and fostered a culture of rapid prototyping and iterative experimentation with clear gains in predictive maintenance and decision speed.
