Case Study: Kemppi brings X8 to market faster and cuts development costs with AWS IoT

A AWS IoT Case Study

How Kemppi brings its IoT solution to market faster and saves 50% on development costs using AWS

Kemppi, the Finnish welding equipment company known as a pioneer in arc welding, wanted to modernize its products and close the skills gap in the welding industry. To do that, it needed to bring its first IoT-enabled X8 welding machine and WeldEye software to market faster, while also reducing infrastructure complexity and development costs. Kemppi chose AWS IoT and related AWS services to support this shift to a cloud-connected welding platform.

Using AWS IoT Core alongside AWS Lambda, Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon API Gateway, and Amazon Elasticsearch Service, Kemppi built a serverless, microservices-based architecture that connects X8 devices to the cloud and stores and processes welding data centrally. With AWS, Kemppi cut software development costs by about 50%, reduced time to market from about a year to just over six months, increased release frequency to up to 10 times per week, and drove downtime from days per year to nearly zero.
