Woot, the original daily deals website, needed to replace its legacy Oracle-based data warehouse in Amazon RDS. The old setup was hard to expand, required custom pipelines for new data sources, and made querying cumbersome for employees who needed access to business data but weren’t SQL experts.

Using AWS Glue as part of a serverless AWS data warehouse architecture, Woot combined Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose, Amazon S3, AWS Lambda, Amazon Athena, and Amazon QuickSight to simplify ingestion, ETL, querying, and visualization. With AWS, Woot cut data warehouse operating costs by nearly 90%, sped up querying, enabled self-service analytics for nontechnical users, and reduced operational burden so much that its lone data engineer could even take a three-week vacation without being paged.
