Zalando Enhances Customer Experience Using Amazon CloudFront

Zalando needed a faster, more flexible way to support its growing web and mobile traffic while improving image delivery and reducing latency. Working with AWS Elemental’s Amazon CloudFront service, the company migrated more than 20 websites and apps to the AWS edge, while carefully timing the rollout around major retail events like Cyber Week.

AWS Elemental helped Zalando implement Lambda@Edge and later CloudFront Functions to normalize images, rewrite URLs, and optimize edge performance more cost-effectively. The results were strong: the migration covered 26.93 PB of data, peak traffic exceeded 100,000 requests per second, cache hit ratios reached 99.5%, and the solution now serves about five billion images per day. Zalando also cut requests to nonoptimized images on home screens by 3x and reported no CloudFront-related issues during Cyber Week 2021.
