PBS cuts CloudFront streaming costs by over 50% with AWS Elemental MediaConvert

The customer PBS, a nonprofit broadcaster, faced the challenge of modernizing its video encoding workflow. Their previous one-size-fits-all approach was inefficient for their wide range of video content. PBS wanted to optimize its encoding to provide more delivery flexibility, improve video quality for viewers, and achieve these goals while saving costs. They turned to vendor AWS Elemental and its service, AWS Elemental MediaConvert, for a solution.

AWS Elemental implemented a solution using MediaConvert with Automated ABR and the QVBR feature, which provided more efficient per-title encoding. PBS also moved to the CMAF packaging format. This resulted in significantly improved video quality and a more than 50 percent reduction in CDN streaming costs. Viewers experienced faster download times for offline playback and higher quality streaming, even on slower connections.
