Preview of the NFL Media Case Study

NFL Media indexes 140,000 faces with AWS Elemental

NFL Media faced the challenge of managing and organizing a massive archive of around a million video assets, with limited searchability and outdated workflows. After relocating its broadcast facility, it needed to efficiently migrate all legacy data and build a modern system to make content highly searchable and available across all platforms for fans and internal creators. They turned to AWS Elemental and broader Amazon Web Services (AWS) for AI, machine learning, and cloud-based solutions to address these needs.

The solution involved leveraging AWS services like Amazon Transcribe for an automated captioning API and Amazon Rekognition for a facial recognition API to index players. AWS Elemental tools helped process live feeds and integrations, creating a modern media asset management system. This allowed NFL Media to automate metadata tagging using NFL Next Gen Stats, enabling powerful search for specific plays or moments. The results included a streamlined 24-hour processing operation for game footage, over 400 active users searching from a web browser, and enhanced content discoverability for producers and editors, fundamentally modernizing how the NFL's historical and live content is managed.
