Case Study: NASA TV achieves scalable, high-quality real-time multi-channel live streaming with AWS Elemental

A AWS Elemental Case Study

Preview of the NASA TV Case Study

NASA TV uses video processing software from AWS Elemental to support its multi-channel live streaming applications

NASA TV, the television service of the U.S. space agency, needed to bring its multi-channel live programming online while meeting strict technical, security and cost criteria. The agency required simultaneous encoding of five HD channels from mixed HD-SDI, IP and ASI inputs, hot‑swap and seamless failover, multi-codec and closed‑caption support, high video quality at constrained bitrates, IP-based control, and the ability to scale for large viewer surges.

Elemental’s software-based encoders met those requirements by processing multiple outputs concurrently, supporting H.264/MPEG-2 and caption passthrough, and offering software upgradability and optimized performance on commodity hardware for lower cost-per-channel. The solution delivered the reliability, scalability and web/API control NASA needed so the agency can stream programs like Education File, This Week @ NASA, NASA Edge and NASA 360 widely and scale its live-streaming capabilities into the future.
