Fuji Television Network Gives Viewers a Different Angle on Live Sports

Fuji Television Network, one of Japan’s largest media companies, wanted to adapt to changing viewing habits by offering synchronized second-screen live streams with alternative camera angles for the 2019 FIVB Volleyball World Cup. The challenge was to deliver internet-based live video with ultra-low latency—around two to three seconds—to match terrestrial broadcast timing and give mobile viewers a seamless, real-time experience.

Fuji built a CMAF‑ULL workflow using AWS Elemental MediaStore, Amazon CloudFront and AWS Direct Connect with a compatible encoder, putting the system into production in three weeks. The player‑tracking and bird’s‑eye feeds streamed reliably to tens of thousands of devices with no distribution issues, drove a fivefold increase in viewings by the final week, removed much of the operational overhead, and paved the way for expanding ultra‑low latency second‑screen services to other sports.
