CNN, a global leader in television and online news, launched CNNgo to address shifting viewer habits as audiences moved to mobile and on-demand video. The challenge was to combine traditional live linear broadcasts with on‑demand archives and time‑shifted services in a single, easy-to-use app that reduced repetition, provided context for developing stories, and supported second‑screen behaviors — all while preserving existing distribution relationships.
CNNgo implemented Elemental’s software-based stack — Elemental Live for adaptive live and VOD encoding and Elemental Delta for content management, delivery and monetization — to repurpose satellite feeds into HLS/HDS streams, nPVR and targeted ad workflows. The result is a unified live-plus-VOD experience with start‑over and catch‑up features, curated related content, expanded distribution (over 86 million homes and Apple TV), improved viewer engagement and more efficient content delivery and monetization.
