Amazon Web Services Selected by NOWO to Drive OTT Video Services

NOWO, a leading Portuguese telecommunications provider, selected AWS Elemental to build a unified, software-based headend to launch a subscription OTT video service. The challenge was to combine its existing cable offering with OTT processing and delivery in an integrated, resilient workflow that supports live streaming, VOD, catch-up and start-over TV (with cloud PVR planned) while keeping operations efficient and manageable.

NOWO deployed AWS Elemental Live, Server and Conductor—integrated with Androme’s Nebula platform and systems integrator VP Media Solutions—to transcode satellite and broadcast feeds into multiple adaptive-bitrate outputs across an initial 70-channel lineup and create on-demand assets. The solution enabled multiscreen delivery (set-top boxes, web, iOS/Android), provided encoder redundancy and high quality of service, and gave NOWO the operational efficiency and flexibility to add 30 more channels and evolve services.
