A AWS Elemental Case Study
ABC, the American Broadcasting Company, needed to get its vast video library ready for the newly announced iPad on a very tight timeline while ensuring synchronized, high-quality playback across networks and devices. The core challenge was eliminating the transcode bottleneck: ABC had to produce multiple resolutions and bit rates for adaptive streaming so content would play seamlessly on the iPad and other platforms.
ABC integrated Elemental Server into its workflow to automate and massively parallelize encoding for Apple HTTP adaptive streaming, producing multiple segmented outputs for real-time stream switching. The server sped encoding by about 5x, enabled more than twenty 640x360/480x360 files to be produced in real time, reduced hardware and operating costs, and helped the ABC News iPad app become one of the most popular launch titles while delivering a smooth, adaptive viewing experience.
