How Email Drove 50% of New Sales for this Entrepreneur’s New Virtual Product

EastVille Comedy Club, Brooklyn's only bona fide comedy club, faced an existential challenge when COVID-19 shut nonessential venues and traditional stand-up — which depends on live audience interaction — couldn’t simply be streamed. Owner Marko Elgart needed a way to keep performers paid, maintain audience connection, and generate revenue without in-person shows.

Elgart launched Comics Quarantined, a daily live, interactive Zoom show (two–three comics, audience chat/webcams, $1 minimum donation) and leaned heavily on email marketing—daily targeted emails using AWeber-branded templates and partnerships like TicketWeb—to reach his full list beyond Brooklyn. The pivot not only funded performers and local charities via the EastVille Survival Fund but also exceeded expectations: email drives roughly half of his business and Comics Quarantined became a vital revenue stream that helped save the club.
