How to do Social Media Monitoring for universities (and why do it)

The University of Melbourne needed a way to protect and promote its reputation, recruit top students and staff globally, and monitor competitor activity and campus issues in real time. To address that challenge it used Awario’s social listening / social media monitoring platform to track mentions, sentiment, languages, countries and competitor share of voice across social channels.

Awario implemented keyword alerts, Boolean searches, topic clouds and share-of-voice comparisons plus email notifications so the university could spot crises, surface user-generated content, and target recruitment by geography and topic. The platform delivered measurable insights — sentiment, country and language breakdowns, and competitor share-of-voice benchmarks (the study’s Manchester example showed splits like 96.8% vs 3.2%) — enabling faster issue detection, more effective outreach and data-driven marketing decisions using Awario.
