Municipality’s Water Treatment Plant faced a critical security challenge when Awake Security discovered Russian-made remote desktop software running on its control server. The software was providing full outsider access to the plant’s chemical treatment processes for a city of nearly 100,000 people, and the server was also running an unpatched, unsupported version of Microsoft Windows 2003.

Awake Security used its EntityIQ and Ava security expert system to automatically detect unusual foreign communications, identify the Russian-made software, and flag the outdated system as abnormal for a critical server. Awake Security alerted the city’s security team, enabling rapid remediation and removing the risk of sabotage to the water supply.
