Large Financial Services Company, a major U.S. consumer finance institution, needed better visibility into more than 17,000 IP phones on its network. Existing security controls were blind to these devices, making it difficult to spot suspicious activity among the normal external communications typical of IP phones. The company used the Awake Security Platform to investigate a concern that some phones might be compromised.

Awake Security analyzed the phones by comparing devices with similar behavioral fingerprints and using encrypted traffic analysis to profile source and destination communications. This approach identified 4 outlier IP phones uploading data to a suspect destination, including phones in executive conference rooms and other sensitive locations. Awake Security helped the customer quickly stop the activity, gather evidence for legal action, and determine that the attack was tied to an IT employee attempting blackmail and ransom.
