Vancouver Community College - Customer Case Study

Vancouver Community College, one of British Columbia’s largest community colleges serving two campuses and 25,000 students, needed to improve campus safety after a third‑party risk assessment showed its seven‑year‑old analog system was failing to deliver usable evidence. The challenge was to upgrade surveillance to provide clearer footage, speed incident review and data sharing, and do so cost‑effectively while leveraging existing infrastructure.

The college installed Avigilon’s high‑definition surveillance solution—Avigilon Control Center NVMS—with a hybrid mix of HD cameras and 16 analog encoders, storing up to 29 days of footage and monitored from control rooms on each campus. The new system produced faster, more usable evidence (up from about 10% usable previously), enabled image sharing across campus in under five minutes, improved collaboration with police, reduced camera and installation costs by leveraging existing gear, freed security staff for patrols, and is easy to use and scalable for future growth and access‑control integration.
