A Avigilon Case Study
Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), which manages services across 185 communities and a population of over 370,000, faced the challenge of protecting widely distributed public assets, facilities and passengers while using existing IT resources. After audits, HRM created a corporate security team charged with designing a unified, cost‑effective surveillance approach that could run on the municipality’s network and improve public safety and asset protection.
HRM deployed Avigilon’s IP-based solution—more than 200 1MP, 2MP and 5MP cameras plus an 8MP 180˚ panoramic dome, Avigilon Control Center software and network video recorders—storing 14 days of footage on distributed servers and monitoring sites from a central 24/7 control room and local stations. Leveraging IT infrastructure enabled wireless ferry monitoring, flexible scaling, superior image clarity and integrated management, cutting investigation times from hours to minutes and reducing installation costs while providing a unified, expandable surveillance platform.
