A Avigilon Case Study
The city of Mechelen, Belgium—a historic tourist center of about 85,000 residents—needed to improve public safety and reduce shoplifting, vandalism and other crimes in high-traffic areas while working with a limited municipal budget. Its aging analog CCTV system produced grainy, unusable footage and required constant live monitoring, leaving investigators without reliable evidence when incidents were reported after the fact.
Mechelen deployed Avigilon’s High-Definition surveillance platform (ACC with HDSM), nine HD cameras ranging from 2 MP PTZ to 29 MP fixed units, and network video recorders to cover shopping districts, museum grounds and parking areas with continuous 30-day storage. The upgrade enabled desktop monitoring by police, clear post-event identification via digital zoom, faster investigations and successful prosecutions, delivering cost-effective city-wide coverage with far fewer cameras.
