The Hobbit Trilogy, led by editor Jabez Olssen, faced an enormous post-production challenge: cutting three films shot over an 18-month span, with thousands of hours of 3D RED footage and a tight deadline to finish the first release in just five months. To manage the scale and complexity, the team relied on Avid Technology and its Media Composer editing workflow.

Avid Technology implemented a post-production setup centered on Media Composer, Media Composer | Nitris DX hardware, and ISIS shared storage across networked editorial stations. This enabled seamless collaboration for eight assistant editors, fast access to 2200 hours of footage, and efficient handling of complex VFX and stereoscopic work.
