Cutting The Great Gatsby in 3D with Media Composer

The Great Gatsby’s editing team, working on Baz Luhrmann’s first 3D adaptation of the classic novel, needed a stable, flexible workflow to manage huge amounts of digital media across Sydney and Los Angeles. They used Avid Technology’s Media Composer along with Avid storage and media management tools to support a fast-moving postproduction process on a film with intensive 3D and VFX demands.

Avid Technology implemented a mirrored, two-continent editing setup built around Media Composer and ISIS shared storage, with on-set and postproduction systems keeping the cut synchronized throughout 18 months of production and post. The result was seamless collaboration across more than a dozen seats, reliable performance under heavy load, and the ability to maintain a 3D-viewable edit for screenings; the team said the system “hardly faltered” during the process.
