Collaborating Across Continents to Create Bokanté’s What Heat Album

Bokanté, the eclectic multicultural group led by Michael League, turned to Avid Technology while creating their second album, *What Heat*. The project posed a major challenge: compared with their first record, it was fully acoustic, expanded from nine musicians to a 61-piece orchestra, and required a complex recording and mixing workflow across multiple locations.

Avid Technology’s Pro Tools was used from the first tracked note onward, with an Avid VENUE S6L on the orchestra setup and an S3 control surface helping manage the huge session. The result was a polished, groove-heavy album that balanced band, orchestra, and vocals across roughly 350 tracks per song at 96kHz; the mix was refined through multiple revisions, with the master reaching its sixth or seventh version before the team felt it was right.
