Academy Award-winning Editor & Director Bring The Martian Home with Avid

The Martian, Ridley Scott’s Mars survival film, faced a massive post-production challenge: hundreds of hours of 3D footage, 6K raw media, GoPro clips, and a fast-moving editing schedule across multiple locations. Editor Pietro Scalia and his team needed an efficient way to organize, share, and begin cutting immediately, and turned to Avid Technology’s Avid Artist and Storage Suite, including Avid Media Composer | Ultimate and Avid ISIS shared storage.

Avid Technology enabled 10 Media Composer systems to work together through ISIS, letting the team ingest and manage roughly 32 TB of offline Avid media and nearly 200 TB of raw RED Dragon footage. The workflow supported 3D editing, visual effects collaboration, and rapid restructuring, helping the film reach studio screening in strong shape and ultimately finish seven weeks early despite the pressure of an accelerated schedule.
