S.A.L.T. Enhances A12 Motorway Maintenance and Driver Safety with Wonderware Industrial Software Applications

Società Autostrada Ligure Toscana (S.A.L.T.) manages Italy’s A12 motorway—more than 96 miles including 24 tunnels and over 45 miles of B‑class mountain roads—and faced the challenge of guaranteeing uninterrupted operation, improving driver safety, and cutting energy and maintenance costs across a large number of control units. To meet these goals S.A.L.T. selected AVEVA solutions (Wonderware System Platform, InTouch HMI and Wonderware Historian) and an industrial automation integrator to deliver a reliable, industry‑grade remote monitoring and control system.

AVEVA’s Wonderware applications automated tunnel lighting and ventilation, provided centralized, real‑time monitoring via Historian, and integrated data from 40 PLCs with redundant servers and intuitive alarm displays for rapid response. The deployment improved safety, reduced energy consumption through astronomy‑calendar scheduling and sensor feedback, and enabled preventive maintenance that lowered maintenance costs—supporting safe operation for some 50 million annual motorists and faster fault detection and resolution.
