Proof of the Pudding in Action at South Africa’s Newest Iron Ore Mine

Assmang Limited’s Khumani iron ore mine in South Africa faced a fast‑track greenfield challenge: build and operate a mega mine from Kalahari sand with reliable process and production monitoring, continuous operation, web access and ERP integration — while keeping future expansions fast and low‑cost. To meet these needs Assmang engaged AVEVA technologies (Wonderware System Platform) including Wonderware InTouch HMI, Wonderware ActiveFactory, the real‑time Historian and Information Server for SCADA, historian and plant web portal functions.

AVEVA’s Wonderware System Platform (ArchestrA) was implemented by integrator Iritron to provide a standards‑based, ISA‑95 aligned plant model, a multi‑user development environment and built‑in redundancy and security. The solution now handles about 44,000 I/O tags (with proven scalability beyond 1 million), manages 63 ControlLogix PLCs, accelerated project delivery (large system designed and deployed in roughly a year), reduced future engineering effort through enforceable templates and made system expansion, ERP integration and reliable data delivery far simpler — delivering measurable savings in engineering time and higher operational availability for Assmang.
