Leading oil & gas service company delivers Johan Sverdrup drilling platform on time and under budget by leveraging AVEVA’s powerful engineering and design tools

Aibel, a leading upstream oil & gas service company with about 4,000 employees across nine offices in Norway, Denmark and Southeast Asia, faced the challenge of delivering the massive Johan Sverdrup 22,500‑ton drilling platform while coordinating more than 850 engineers working in different countries. To manage the project’s unprecedented scale and multi‑site collaboration needs, Aibel relied on AVEVA’s engineering and design software—primarily AVEVA PDMS, with a planned transition to AVEVA E3D and use of AVEVA Engage/AVEVA VR for digital‑twin visualization.

AVEVA implemented PDMS (and later AVEVA E3D/Engineering) with PDMS Global synchronizing the database between locations, enabling simultaneous work across sites and supporting up to 300 licenses at peak. The AVEVA solution helped Aibel deliver the Johan Sverdrup platform on time and under budget, produced roughly 55,000 CAD drawings, and delivered a 20% reduction in engineering hours, with additional man‑hour savings expected as Aibel adopts AVEVA E3D.
