How Henkel Uses Big Data to Reduce its Environmental Footprint

Henkel AG & Co., a global consumer packaged goods company, needed to reduce specific energy consumption, support ISO 50001 across its sites and improve production-side resource efficiency, but lacked consistent collection and use of consumption and emissions data across its global supply chain. To build a centralized Environmental Management System and Digital Backbone for its Laundry & Home Care business, Henkel partnered with AVEVA and deployed AVEVA/Wonderware software modules including System Platform, Process Historian, Performance and Intelligence.

AVEVA implemented a device‑agnostic, centrally managed EMS that integrated PLCs, SAP, labeling and MES data, consolidating 3,000+ measurement points and serving some 600 users for real‑time monitoring and benchmarking. The AVEVA solution produced measurable gains: a 9% reduction in energy consumption (about €15 million saved), virtually eliminated incorrect labeling (100% label quality, >99.8% first‑time right), and an average 4.5% improvement in OEE within one year.
