Generic Drum Unit Simulator Boosts Productivity at South African Power Plant

Eskom Lethabo Power Station faced the challenge of improving operator competence to boost safety, efficiency and profitability while reducing operating costs across its large coal-fired plant. To address this, AVEVA supplied a Generic Drum Unit Operator Training System (OTS) — a DYNSIM-based dynamic simulation solution — to provide realistic, first-principles training and DCS-like interfaces for operators.

AVEVA’s OTS includes dynamic process models, an instructor station, DCS-type controls and multi-station visibility, enabling training for normal and off‑normal scenarios and simplifying instructor use. The simulator was delivered on time and to budget and has measurably reduced operating costs while improving plant understanding and personnel safety, helping Eskom Lethabo support continuous electricity supply to roughly 95% of South Africa.
