Case Study: Bluewater achieves on-time First Oil and modernized ICSS with AVEVA

A AVEVA Case Study

Preview of the Bluewater Case Study

Bluewater and its customer can now monitor the control and safety systems, both on and offshore, in real time

Bluewater needed to modernize the integrated control and safety systems on its FPSO Glas Dowr to meet a critical First Oil deadline, maximize uptime and reduce total cost of ownership. The project faced geographic teams, late-arriving process data and a very small window to upgrade live emergency shutdown and fire & gas systems. AVEVA (using the Invensys portfolio) supplied a full ICSS modernization including Foxboro I/A Series DCS, Triconex/Trident safety systems, Wonderware Historian and Foxboro instrumentation to replace the aging Emerson ProVox/DeltaV systems.

AVEVA delivered a turnkey ICSS upgrade—hardware and application migration, ~2,000 hardwired and 7,000 serial I/Os, redundant switched fibre network, firmware upgrades to safety I/O, FAT/SAT, commissioning and operator training—working closely with Bluewater to minimize handovers. The solution was completed on time and on budget, enabling Bluewater to achieve First Oil on 14 October 2011, gain real-time on- and offshore monitoring and reporting (daily/weekly KPIs), and improve system availability and stability while lowering operational risk. AVEVA’s integrated approach drove the successful execution and measurable operational benefits.
