A AVEVA Case Study
Barcelona-El Prat International Airport, operated by AENA, faced rising complexity during a decade of expansion as dozens of vendor-specific control systems forced operators to learn up to 20 different technologies, increased training and maintenance costs, and slowed incident response. To standardize and scale operations, AENA selected AVEVA — deploying AVEVA System Platform with InTouch HMI and Historian — as a non‑proprietary, centralized control solution.
AVEVA implemented a template-driven, unified SCADA/control architecture that enforced common engineering rules and integrated building management, power plants, and luggage handling across terminals. The AVEVA system consolidated operations from 35,000 signals to 700,000 inputs across 80 servers in five control environments (with nearly 1,000,000 signals expected in the final phase), reduced engineering and maintenance costs, improved alarm response and operational visibility, lowered lost-luggage rates, and delivers scalable, replicable control capabilities for AENA’s airport network.
