AVEVA Solution Brings Ease of Use and Scalability to Spokane Water Department

Spokane Water Department engaged AVEVA to replace an aging 1980s SCADA system that was limited to 48 sites and hampered by obsolete telemetry. The Department required a more scalable, easy-to-use solution that would let operators make additions and changes without outside technical assistance; AVEVA System Platform, AVEVA InTouch® HMI, AVEVA Historian and AVEVA ActiveFactory® were selected to meet those needs.

Using AVEVA software (implemented with local integrator H2E), RTUs were replaced with PLCs, radio communications were added, master templates were deployed and a redundant SCADA architecture was installed. The AVEVA solution now supports 57 sites (and growing), brings new stations online in as little as 1.5 hours, cuts travel to remote stations to about one-third of prior time, helps keep lost water rates at just 6%, and leverages Upriver Dam’s ~70 million kilowatt‑hours of annual generation to power the plant while ensuring uninterrupted 24/7 operations.
