bp, a major offshore oil and gas operator, faced the challenge of expensive asset failures and unplanned downtime on its production platforms. To move from a reactive to a predictive maintenance paradigm, bp partnered with vendor Avathon to implement its Industrial AI platform, which uses machine learning to analyze sensor data and predict equipment failures.

Avathon's solution deployed machine learning models across 20 critical subsystems to identify anomalous behavior and predict impending failures. The results were significant, with the platform identifying 75% of production-impacting events and providing up to 9 days of lead time for interventions. This allowed bp to improve annual production by 4%, equating to up to $30 million in increased production per platform annually.
