A Avanade Case Study
The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center faced a major information challenge: clinical care, research data, radiology images and inpatient/outpatient systems were siloed across roughly 60 back-end systems, and no commercial EMR could provide the interoperability, scalability or extensibility the center needed. Leadership required a solution that would support high performance, rapid feature delivery and integration of emerging data types (including genomic data) without disrupting ongoing patient care.
M.D. Anderson built ClinicStation in‑house using a Service Oriented Architecture on the Microsoft .NET platform and a software‑factory development model (about 100 developers, 70 modules, eight releases). The system presents source data in a unified environment—handling up to 4,000 service calls/sec and supporting 7,000–8,000 concurrent users—yielding faster, better-informed clinical decisions, roughly a half‑hour saved per physician per day, lower costs, improved workflows and wide recognition as a replicable model for other institutions.
